Welcome to our Moving House Checklist! Moving can be a stressful time, but with a bit of planning, it can go smoothly.

Here’s your step-by-step guide to ensure nothing gets overlooked.

 

Eight Weeks Before Moving

Declutter: Sort out items to sell, donate, or dispose of.

Quotes: Get estimates from removal companies and book your preferred choice.

 

Six Weeks Before Moving

Confirm Dates: Finalise your moving date with all parties involved.

Inventory List: Create a list of your what you have and what you’ll need for your new home.

Packing Supplies: Purchase boxes, tape, and other packing materials.

 

Four Weeks Before Moving

Start Packing: Begin packing non-essential items.

Insurance: Check your home insurance covers your move and new property.

Re-direct Post: Look into setting up a re-direct for your post from the date you move into your new home.

Check in with Mortgage Advisor: Don’t forget to keep in touch with your mortgage advisor with expected completion dates and any issues that may affect your mortgage agreement.

 

Two Weeks Before Moving

Utilities: Speak to utility companies to discuss the disconnection and reconnection of utilities (gas, electric, water).

Defrost Freezer: If moving your fridge/freezer, start to empty and defrost it.

Pet/Child Care: Arrange care for pets and children on moving day.

 

One Week Before Moving

Essential Box: Pack a box with essentials for the first few days (toiletries, clothes, kettle, snacks, charging cables).

Confirm Details: Reconfirm arrangements with your removal company.

Clean: Clean your current property or arrange for a cleaning service.

 

Day Before Moving

Final Packing: Pack remaining items and ensure everything is labelled.

Documents: Keep important documents (passports, mortgage & solicitor papers) in a safe place.

Keys: Ensure you have all keys for your property ready to hand over.

 

Moving Day

Meter Readings: Take final meter readings for utilities.

Supervise: Be present to oversee the removal process.

Check: Do a final check of your old property to ensure nothing is left behind, especially in the loft, garage or shed.

 

After the Move

Unpack Essentials: Start with your essential box.

Change Address: Start notifying important contacts (banks, DVLA, HMRC, Utility Companies etc.).

Register: Set up your new address for the electoral roll and local GP.

Relax: Take some time to relax and enjoy your new home!

Label Boxes: Clearly label boxes with their contents and intended room.

Stay Organised: Keep all important moving documents in a single folder.

Take Breaks: Moving is hard work; remember to take regular breaks, stay hydrated and don’t let yourself get hangry!
